Atauro Island Exile Camps & Caves

    MakiliTimor-Leste19th Century

Atauro Island (Município Ataúro), situated 25 kilometers directly north of Dili across the Ombai Strait, is world-renowned for its pristine marine biodiversity and coral reefs. However, behind its tropical beauty lies a dark history as a desolate penal colony and place of political exile. Used by Portuguese colonial authorities from the late 19th century as a penal island for political exiles, Atauro was repurposed by the Indonesian military in the 1980s as a harsh internment camp where over 6,000 Timorese civilians were forcibly deported and held under brutal conditions in Makili and Beloi. Today, the island's former exile sites and Japanese WWII defense caves are associated with local tales of ghost lights, disembodied cries, and restless spirits.
