Konye-Urgench Archaeological Reserve
Konye-Urgench (Köneürgenç or Old Gurganj) was the magnificent medieval capital of the Khwarazmian Empire, positioned at a vital crossing of the Silk Road near the Amu Darya river. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Urgench was celebrated across the Islamic world as a glittering center of science, philosophy, and architecture, housing legendary scholars like Avicenna (Ibn Sina) and Al-Biruni. The city suffered catastrophic devastation twice: first in 1221 when Genghis Khan's sons breached the Amu Darya dams to flood the city after a six-month siege, and again in 1388 when Timur (Tamerlane) sacked and razed it to the ground, salting its fields. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage reserve features towering monuments including the 60-meter Kutlug-Timur Minaret and the breathtaking Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum, legendary for phantom calls, floating green light orbs, and spectral weeping of flood victims.
