Pujini Ruins (Mkame Mdume Fortress)
The Pujini Ruins, located near Pujini village ten kilometres overall from Chake Chake on Pemba Island, contain the overgrown remains of a 15th-century fortified palace. Built by the ruthless ruler Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman, known by his feared moniker Mkame Mdume ('The Milker of Men'), the citadel was famed for its thick ramparts, deep moat, and brutal forced labour. Shrouded in dense tropical forest, Pujini is widely regarded as one of Pemba Island's most haunted places.
