Kilwa Kisiwani
Kilwa Kisiwani is a historic island located off the coast of Lindi Region in southern Tanzania. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, it stood as the royal capital of the legendary Kilwa Sultanate, controlling the lucrative Indian Ocean trade in gold, ivory, and spices. Home to the monumental Great Mosque and the sprawling palace of Husuni Kubwa, the island's imposing coral ruins are steeped in local Swahili traditions of ancient sultans, spirit guardians, and nocturnal calls to prayer.
