Changuu Island, commonly known as Prison Island or Kibandiko, is a small coral islet situated 5.6 kilometres off the coast of Stone Town. Uninhabited until the 1860s, the island served as a detention site for rebellious enslaved Africans and later as a yellow fever quarantine station built by British colonial officials.
