    Ashmore Estates, situated in rural Coles County outside Ashmore, Illinois, is a notorious historic institution with a dark, tragic past. Originally constructed in 1916 as the almshouse for the Coles County Poor Farm, it later operated as a private psychiatric facility and care home until its abandonment in 1987. Featured on Travel Channel's *Ghost Adventures* and *Ghost Hunters*, this imposing brick building is internationally famous for aggressive poltergeist activity, shadow figures, and disembodied voices.
