Peoria State Hospital, originally known as the Illinois Asylum for the Incurable Insane, was a psychiatric facility in Bartonville, Illinois, operating from 1902 to 1973. Spearheaded by visionary physician Dr. George Zeller, the institution pioneered humane mental health care using cottage-style housing rather than caged confinement. Despite its progressive roots, the hospital saw thousands of deaths and is famous for supernatural legends, most notably 'Old Book' — a beloved patient-gravedigger whose phantom was reportedly witnessed by hundreds during his own funeral.
