    Peoria State Hospital, historically known as Bartonville State Hospital or the Illinois Asylum for the Incurable Insane, is a sprawling 63-building historic district in Bartonville, Illinois. Founded in 1902 under the compassionate leadership of Dr. George Zeller, the asylum pioneered humane mental health care. Despite its noble origins, the complex is nationally famous for intense paranormal encounters, most notably the legend of 'Old Book'—a beloved patient whose ghost wept under an elm tree during his own funeral.
