Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, standing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in Buxton, is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States at 198 feet. Guarding the treacherous shoals known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, this iconic black-and-white spiraled beacon was constructed in 1870 to replace an earlier 1802 stone tower. In 1999, the entire 4,800-ton structure was historically moved 2,900 feet inland to protect it from severe beach erosion. Beyond its engineering legacy, the lighthouse and surrounding maritime grounds host enduring ghost stories involving phantom lightkeepers, phantom cat apparitions, and tragic shipwrecks.
