Silver Run Tunnel (Tunnel No. 19)
Located along the North Bend Rail Trail near Cairo in Ritchie County, West Virginia, Silver Run Tunnel (historically known as Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Tunnel No. 19) is a legendary 1,376-foot abandoned railroad tunnel built in 1857. Renowned as one of the most famous ghost legends in American railroad history, the tunnel gained national fame in the late 19th century due to the 'Silver Run Signalman's Ghost'—the specter of a beautiful young woman in a flowing white dress who repeatedly appeared on the tracks inside the dark tunnel, forcing trains to screech to a halt. Today, converted into a popular hiking and biking trail, visitors report hearing phantom train whistles, seeing glowing white apparitions inside the stone portal, and feeling icy gusts of wind in the pitch black center.
