Gaineswood Mansion
Gaineswood Mansion in Demopolis, Alabama, is widely celebrated as one of North America's finest remaining examples of Greek Revival architecture. Constructed over nearly two decades between 1843 and 1861 by General Nathan Bryan Whitfield, the sprawling 480-acre estate was built largely through forced labor. Beyond its grand interior domes and neoclassical columns lies an enduring ghost legend involving Evelyn Carter, a young woman from Virginia who died at the mansion during the antebellum era. Her body remained unburied in the house during a severe winter, giving rise to long-standing reports of phantom piano music, soft rustling skirts, and disembodied footsteps throughout the upper corridors.
