    Fort Washita

    DurantUnited States1842

Fort Washita, situated near Durant in Bryan County, Oklahoma, is a historic frontier military post established in 1842 by General (and future President) Zachary Taylor. Designated a National Historic Landmark and owned by the Chickasaw Nation, the fort was constructed to defend the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations from raids by Plains Indian tribes and encroaching Anglo settlers. Abandoned by Federal troops at the outbreak of the Civil War and subsequently occupied and burned by Confederate forces, Fort Washita stands as Oklahoma's premier frontier historic ruin and one of the state's most fiercely haunted locations, world-famous for the legend of 'Aunt Jane' and spectral soldier apparitions.
