Fort Morgan
Situated on Mobile Point at the western terminus of Highway 180, twenty-two miles west of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Fort Morgan is a monumental nineteenth-century masonry pentagonal star fort overlooking the entrance to Mobile Bay. Built between 1819 and 1834 on the site of War of 1812 fortifications, Fort Morgan played a legendary role during the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, where Union Admiral David Farragut famously uttered 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!' Active across four major wars—the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II—this National Historic Landmark contains over forty-six million handmade bricks. Steeped in a brutal military history of naval bombardments, heavy artillery sieges, and prisoner deaths, Fort Morgan is widely celebrated as one of the most intensely haunted historic military sites on the Gulf Coast.
