Government Building

Old Capitol Museum
The Old Mississippi State Capitol in downtown Jackson served as the seat of state government from 1839 until 1903. A masterpiece of Greek Revival architecture designed by William Nichols, this historic statehouse witnessed monumental historical turning points, including the 1861 Mississippi Ordinance of Secession, the 1890 State Constitution, and speeches by Henry Clay and Jefferson Davis. Now operated as the Old Capitol Museum and designated a National Historic Landmark, the building is famously haunted by former governors, legislators, and night watchmen.
