Kerr City Ghost Town
Kerr City is a historic nineteenth-century ghost town situated in Marion County, Florida, along the northern shores of Lake Kerr within the Marion National Forest region. Founded in 1884 as a thriving citrus-growing community and stagecoach stop, it became the second platted municipality in Marion County before being devastated by catastrophic agricultural freezes. Today, Kerr City remains remarkably preserved as a quiet time capsule of Florida's pioneer era, comprising vintage wooden cabins, historic structures, and Florida's oldest Texaco gas station. Though now privately owned and closed to the general public, the deserted settlement carries an eerie reputation for ghostly lights, disembodied pioneer chatter, and phantom shadows lurking among the ancient oak groves.
