    Central State Hospital

    MilledgevilleUnited States1842

Sprawling across 2,000 acres in Milledgeville, Georgia, Central State Hospital was founded in 1842 as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum. By the 1960s, the facility had ballooned into the largest mental asylum in the world, housing nearly 12,000 patients simultaneously across more than 200 buildings. Marred by a tragic century-long history of severe overcrowding, lobotomies, electroshock therapy, and over 25,000 unmarked patient burials marked by 2,000 metal irons in Cedar Lane Cemetery, it is widely considered one of the most intensely haunted abandoned asylum complexes in America.
