West Virginia Penitentiary
Located in Moundsville, West Virginia, the West Virginia Penitentiary is a formidable Gothic Revival fortress that operated from 1866 to 1995. Built directly across from the prehistoric Grave Creek Mound, the prison earned a dark reputation as one of the most violent maximum-security institutions in the United States, plagued by overcrowding, riots, fires, stabbings, and 94 official executions (85 hangings and 9 electrocutions in 'Old Sparky'). Today, it stands as a legendary paranormal investigation hotspot, famous for the 'Shadow Man' roaming Cell Block A, disembodied screams at the North Wagon Gate, and terrifying encounters in the subterranean 'Sugar Shack.'
