    Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site

    PerryvilleUnited States1862

On October 8, 1862, the rolling hills near Perryville, Kentucky, became the setting for the bloodiest Civil War battle fought on Kentucky soil. Over 50,000 Union and Confederate soldiers clashed in a ferocious battle born of desperation for scarce drinking water during a severe drought. The battle resulted in nearly 7,600 casualties in just five hours of fierce combat. Today preserved as Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site across more than 1,000 acres, the tranquil farmland is widely considered one of the most haunted outdoor battlefields in North America, renowned for phantom gunfire, marching footsteps across dry pastures, apparitions of fallen soldiers, and lingering spectral cries.
