Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary
Tucked deep in the rugged Morgan County mountains near Petros, Tennessee, Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was known as the 'End of the Line' for the state's most dangerous criminals from 1896 until its closure in 2009. Carved out of stone and surrounded by impenetrable mountain wilderness, this maximum-security prison harbored notorious inmates, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassin, James Earl Ray. Today, the converted museum and distillery is widely considered one of the most intensely haunted penal institutions in the United States.
