    Point Lookout State Park

    ScotlandUnited States1862

Occupying the southernmost tip of Maryland's western shore where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, Point Lookout State Park possesses a dark and tragic history as the site of Camp Hoffman, the largest Union prisoner-of-war camp during the American Civil War. Between 1863 and 1865, over fifty-two thousand Confederate soldiers were imprisoned under atrocious conditions in overcrowded tent cities. Over four thousand prisoners perished from disease, exposure, and malnutrition. Today, Point Lookout is widely recognized by historians and paranormal investigators as one of the most heavily haunted state parks in the nation, renowned for phantom sightings in the historic 1830 lighthouse, disembodied cries on the beach, and ghostly sentries patrolling Fort Lincoln.
