    Bacon's Castle

    SurryUnited States1665

Located in Surry County, Virginia, Bacon's Castle is the oldest documented brick dwelling in North America, built in 1665 by wealthy planter Arthur Allen. The rare High Jacobean mansion gained its famous name during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, when rebel followers of Nathaniel Bacon seized and fortified the home as a stronghold against Royal Governor Sir William Berkeley. Celebrated for its triple-stacked curvilinear chimney stacks and rare Carolean architecture, Bacon's Castle is equally renowned for centuries of spectral sightings. Visitors and caretakers routinely report seeing a glowing fireball or orb floating between the upper windows and outbuildings, hearing ghostly footsteps pacing the attic, and witnessing furniture moving on its own.
