Dead Woman's Crossing
Dead Woman's Crossing, located along a secluded stretch of Deer Creek northeast of Weatherford in Custer County, Oklahoma, is the site of one of the state's most infamous unsolved murder mysteries. On July 28, 1905, young schoolteacher Katie DeWitt James vanished after boarding a wooden buggy with local woman Fannie Norton. Weeks later, Katie's decapitated body was discovered hidden in the tall weeds along the creek bed. Spurred by the gruesome crime and subsequent suicide of the primary suspect, the remote creek bridge became a notorious site for ghost sightings, disembodied screams, and phantom lights.
