    Battleship USS North Carolina

    Moored across the Cape Fear River from historic downtown Wilmington, the USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the decorated lead vessel of American fast battleships in World War II. Participating in every major Pacific naval offensive from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, the ship earned 15 battle stars and suffered ten casualties during a torpedo strike in 1942. Preserved as a State Memorial and National Historic Landmark, the battleship is renowned as one of North Carolina's most supernatural sites, haunted by young sailors.
