    Rabati Malik Caravanserai

    NavoiyUzbekistan11th Century CE

Rabati Malik ('The Royal Fort') is a colossal eleventh-century Karakhanid royal caravanserai ruin situated along the ancient Silk Road highway between Samarkand and Bukhara, near Navoiy. Built between 1078 and 1079 CE by Karakhanid ruler Shams al-Mulk Nasr, Rabati Malik functioned as a heavily fortified royal palace-hotel providing shelter, defense, and luxury for kings, diplomats, and merchant caravans crossing the Kyzylkum Desert. Directly across the highway stands the Sardoba Malik, a massive brick-domed subterranean cistern built to supply the caravanserai with fresh water. Travelers and local drivers report phantom camel caravan bells chiming across the desert highway at night, disembodied Silk Road merchant voices echoing within the Sardoba dome, and mysterious light spheres hovering above the monumental portal arch.
