Beechworth Lunatic Asylum
Beechworth Lunatic Asylum, officially known as Mayday Hills Hospital, sits atop a prominent hill overlooking the historic gold-mining town of Beechworth, Victoria. Operating from 1867 to 1995, it was one of Victoria's largest psychiatric institutions. Over 9,000 patients died within its walls. Famed for its imposing Victorian architecture, sinister admission procedures, and legendary apparitions like Matron Sharpe, Beechworth Asylum is widely regarded as one of the most haunted sites in the Southern Hemisphere.
