    Castle Blackstone

    BlackstoneAustralia1889–1930s

Castle Blackstone, historically named Brynhyfryd, was a magnificent 49-room Victorian mansion built in 1889 atop Blackstone Hill in Ipswich, Queensland. Constructed for wealthy Welsh coal mining magnate Lewis Thomas, the palatial estate boasted an hydraulic passenger elevator, billiard rooms, and electric lighting. Demolished in the 1930s after Thomas's death, the hilltop now retains scattered brick foundations, terraced gardens, and mountain bike trails. It is celebrated across local Ipswich folklore for tales of phantom footsteps, disembodied organ music, and shadowy figures wandering the ruined grounds.
