    Richmond Bridge

    Constructed by convict hard labor between 1823 and 1825, Richmond Bridge in Tasmania is the oldest stone arch bridge still in continuous use in Australia. Crossing the Coal River just north of Hobart, this iconic sandstone structure is famous not only for its early colonial engineering, but also for its grim history of convict brutality. The bridge is reputedly haunted by the ghost of George Grover, a tyrannical convict overseer who was thrown off the parapet to his death in 1832, as well as an enigmatic spectral hound known as the Richmond ghost dog.

    Richmond Gaol

    Richmond Gaol, located on Bathurst Street in historic Richmond, Tasmania, is the oldest intact convict gaol in Australia. Constructed by convict labor between 1825 and 1840, the sandstone prison predates Port Arthur and held thousands of male and female convicts under brutal punishment systems. Preserved in its original 19th-century state, complete with solitary confinement 'solitary boxes' and flogging yards, it is renowned as one of Tasmania's most active haunted heritage sites, famous for phantom footsteps, sudden cold draughts, and oppressive convict energy.
