    Rottnest Island, known to the traditional Whadjuk Nyoongar owners as Wadjemup, is a scenic island situated 19 kilometers off the coast of Perth, Western Australia. While famous worldwide today for its picturesque beaches and friendly quokkas, Wadjemup carries a deeply somber history as a colonial penal establishment. Between 1838 and 1931, over 3,700 Aboriginal men and boys from across Western Australia were forcibly removed from their lands and imprisoned on the island under brutal conditions. With at least 373 documented deaths in custody and the largest unmarked Aboriginal burial ground in Australia, the island is widely revered as a sacred, haunted landscape filled with restless spirits.
