    Sunbury Asylum

    SunburyAustralia1879–1985

Sunbury Asylum (officially Sunbury Mental Hospital or Caloola County Asylum), situated on Jackson's Hill in Sunbury, Victoria, is a massive 19th-century psychiatric institution. Opened in 1879 on land originally developed as an industrial school for neglected children, the complex grew into one of Victoria's largest mental hospitals, housing over 1,000 intellectual disability and psychiatric patients for more than a century until its closure in 1985. Widely recognized as one of Victoria's most haunted abandoned sites, it is famous for stories of patient deaths, phantom footsteps, disembodied crying, and shadowy figures in derelict wards.
