    Aokigahara Sea of Trees

    FujikawaguchikoJapan864 AD–Present

Aokigahara, also known as the Jukai ('Sea of Trees'), is a dense 35-square-kilometer primeval forest growing on hardened volcanic lava at the northwestern base of Mount Fuji. Formed after the massive Jōgan eruption of 864 AD, the forest is shrouded in centuries of dark mythology, including ancient 'ubasute' folk legends and vengeful Yūrei spirit lore. Famed for its disorienting magnetic iron soil and near-total acoustic silence, Aokigahara is one of Japan's most notorious supernatural sites.
