    Conimicut Lighthouse

    WarwickUnited States1883

Standing offshore on a rocky shoal at the mouth of the Providence River where it meets Narragansett Bay, Conimicut Lighthouse is a historic 58-foot cast-iron 'sparkplug' lighthouse in Warwick, Rhode Island. Constructed in 1883 using pneumatic caisson engineering to replace an earlier 1868 wooden structure, it served as a vital navigational aid guiding commercial shipping vessels into Providence harbor. Notable as one of the very last lighthouses in the United States to convert from acetylene gas to electricity, the isolated maritime outpost carries a rich history of solitary keepers, ice floe disasters, disembodied footsteps, and mysterious lantern lights.
