Pine Barrens
Covering over 1.1 million acres across southern New Jersey, the Pine Barrens is a vast, heavily forested coastal plain ecosystem composed of pitch pines, cedar swamps, and ghost towns. Famous worldwide as the ancient domain of the Jersey Devil—a mythical winged cryptid allegedly born as the cursed 13th child of Mother Leeds in 1735—the heavily shaded wilderness is renowned for blood-curdling midnight shrieks, phantom apparitions of early bog iron workers, and strange magnetic anomalies.
