    Himeji Castle, known as Shirasagijō ('White Heron Castle') for its elegant white plaster walls, is Japan's premier surviving feudal castle and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Beneath its grand keep lies 'Okiku's Well' (Okiku-no-ido), the focal point of one of Japan's most famous classic ghost stories ('Banshū Sarayashiki'). The tragic legend of Okiku, a beautiful maidservant tortured and thrown down the well, inspired generations of Bunraku, Kabuki, and J-Horror masterpieces like 'Ringu'.
