Trou au Natron
Plunging nearly one thousand meters into the heart of the volcanic Tibesti Mountains, Trou au Natron—known locally in the Teda language as Doon Orei—is a colossal extinct caldera spanning eight kilometers wide. Its floor is covered in a brilliant white crust of sodium carbonate interspersed with dark volcanic cinder cones, creating a surreal landscape. Indigenous Toubou nomads revere the crater as a sacred realm inhabited by powerful Saharan spirits, reporting mysterious subterranean hums, phantom wisps of mist, and spectral guardian entities that watch over the ancient crater rim.
