Uplistsikhe Cave City
Carved directly into a towering sandstone cliff above the Mtkvari River, Uplistsikhe—meaning the Lord's Fortress—is one of the oldest urban settlements in the Caucasus. Dating back to the Early Iron Age, this ancient pagan sanctuary and rock-cut city witnessed pagan ritual sacrifices, Christian conversion wars, and Mongol massacres, leaving a lingering aura of mystery. This historic site remains one of the most compelling and atmospheric dark tourism destinations in Georgia.
