Ostrog Monastery
Ostrog Monastery, carved into a sheer vertical cliff face high above the Zeta River valley, is Montenegro's most sacred Orthodox pilgrimage site and one of the Balkans' most mystically renowned locations. Founded in 1665 by Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije), the upper monastery complex houses his uncorrupted relics, which believers claim possess miraculous healing powers and produce unexplainable divine phenomena. Beyond devout religious reverence, centuries of local tradition recount mystical apparitions, glowing light phenomena appearing over the mountain cliffs, incorporeal voices reciting prayers at midnight, and miraculous protections during wartime bombardments.
