Citadel of Mutsamudu
The Citadel of Mutsamudu, looming over the historic port town of Mutsamudu on Anjouan island, was constructed in the late 18th century by Sultan Abdallah I to defend the kingdom against Malagasy slave raids. Built with massive coral-stone walls, underground dungeons, and British-supplied cannons, the fortress survived intense naval bombardments and sieges. Today, the fortress is famous for ghost sightings of 18th-century sentinels, echoing footsteps in dark subterranean cells, and phantom cannon fire heard during stormy nights.
