    Dundaga Castle

    DundagaLatvia1249

Dundaga Castle in Kurzeme is the largest and best-preserved medieval castle in North Kurzeme. Built in 1249 by the Archbishopric of Riga and later acquired by the von Osten-Sacken noble family, this massive stone fortress underwent numerous reconstructions following devastating fires and military sieges. Dundaga Castle is world-famous in Latvian folklore for the legend of the Green Lady, a young maiden entombed alive within the castle walls for inadvertently witnessing a secret subterranean wedding of the dwarf king. Guests staying in its hotel rooms and guides in its vaulted halls regularly report sightings of her green-robed phantom.

    Liepāja Northern Forts

    LiepājaLatvia1894

The Liepāja Northern Forts (Ziemeļu forti) are massive, eroding Tsarist military coastal fortifications situated directly on the Baltic Sea shore north of Liepāja. Constructed between 1894 and 1908 as part of Tsar Alexander III’s Naval Fortress, the vast bunker complex featured heavy artillery batteries, subterranean ammunition bunkers, and barracks. In 1908, Tsar Nicholas II ordered the fortress decommissioned and blown up, leaving giant cracked concrete structures collapsing into crashing sea waves. Unlit subterranean bunkers and half-submerged ruins are associated with phantom soldier encounters, unexplained gunfire echoes, and disembodied voices.
