Ghat Fortress
Ghat Fortress, known locally as Koukemen, sits dramatically atop a rocky sandstone hill overlooking the ancient Saharan oasis town of Ghat in southwestern Libya. Originally constructed by Ottoman military forces and later rebuilt by Italian colonial troops in the early twentieth century, this formidable stone citadel served as a strategic desert stronghold guarding trans-Saharan trade routes. Local Tuareg lore tells of phantom desert sentries, night spirits whispering across the battlements, and mysterious lights floating above the ancient hilltop.
