Roopkund Lake (Skeleton Lake)
Roopkund Lake, world-famous as 'Skeleton Lake', is a remote glacial tarn lying at 16,500 feet (5,020 metres) in the Garhwal Himalayas of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Embedded beneath frozen ice at the base of Trishul peak lie the skeletal remains of between 300 and 800 humans, visible when the summer sun melts the ice layer. Surrounded by mountain folklore of divine wrath and verified by modern genome science, Roopkund remains one of the world's most mysterious natural wonders.
