Massawa Ottoman Old Town Ruins
Massawa Old Town on Massawa Island is an ancient coral-stone port city shaped by Ottoman, Egyptian, and Italian rulers over five centuries. Characterized by narrow alleyways, carved wooden mashrabiya balconies, and white coral buildings, large sections were damaged during the 1990 Battle of Massawa. Known locally as a city of shadows, night visitors report phantom call-to-prayers, disembodied footsteps, and mysterious glowing lights in abandoned courtyards.
