Mdina (The Silent City)
Mdina, known as 'The Silent City', is Malta's ancient fortified capital situated atop a high hill in the Western Region. Inhabited for over 4,000 years, the enclosed medieval city features narrow cobblestone alleys, noble palaces, and St Paul's Cathedral. Deprived of political supremacy after the Knights built Valletta, Mdina earned its quiet epithet. It is famous worldwide for ghost stories including Katarina, a heartbroken 16th-century bride, and headless knights patrolling the silent streetways at night.
