    Drangey Island & Grettislaug

    SkagafjörðurIceland11th century

Drangey Island is a steep volcanic palagonite islet rising dramatically out of the waters of Skagafjörður in northern Iceland, accompanied on the mainland shore by the geothermal hot spring Grettislaug. Famous as the final hideout of outlaw hero Grettir Ásmundarson (Grettir the Strong) in Grettis Saga, Drangey is steeped in dark Norse lore, evil cliff demons, and the curse of the undead revenant Glámr. Today, the sheer 180-meter cliffs and isolated shorelines are widely reputed to be haunted by restless Viking spirits, demonic cliff entities, and phantom sea wraiths.

    Fróðá Farmstead

    SnæfellsnesbærIcelandca. 1000 AD

Fróðá Farmstead, situated on the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, is the setting for the famous 'Fróðá Marvels' (Fróðárundur), the most extensive ghost haunting recorded in medieval Norse literature. Detailed in the 13th-century Eyrbyggja Saga, the estate was plagued around 1000 AD by a terrifying wave of deaths, phantom seals rising through the hearth floor, and undead revenants crowding around the hall fire. The hauntings were only halted after chieftain Snorri the Priest held a formal door-court (dura-dómr) to legally banish the dead, making Fróðá an iconic saga landmark and dark tourism site.

Myrká Church is a quiet rural churchyard in the scenic Hörgárdalur valley of northern Iceland, renowned worldwide as the setting for Iceland's most famous ghost story, 'The Deacon of Dark River' (Djákninn á Myrká). The tale recounts the tragic fate of a young church deacon who drowned in a flooded river while riding to fetch his beloved Guðrún for Christmas festivities. Returning from the grave as a monstrous undead revenant on his grey horse, the deacon attempted to drag Guðrún into his open grave, leaving behind a chilling legend that continues to draw folklore enthusiasts to the quiet valley.
