Skopje Old Bazaar
The Old Bazaar in Skopje (Stara Čaršija) is one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, serving as Skopje's primary trade center since at least the 12th century. Featuring narrow cobblestone lanes, Ottoman caravanserais, Turkish baths, and artisan workshops, the bazaar transforms after midnight from a vibrant commercial hub into a quiet, shadowed labyrinth where night watchmen and shopkeepers report encounters with ghostly Ottoman merchants and phantom horse-drawn carts.
