Skopje Fortress
Skopje Fortress, locally known as Kale Fortress, stands on the highest point in Skopje overlooking the Vardar River. Built in the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and expanded throughout the Bulgarian, Serbian, and Ottoman eras, this ancient stronghold has witnessed countless sieges, battles, and bloody conflicts. Today, the dramatic stone ramparts and watchtowers are renowned not only for panoramic city views but also for night-time encounters with shadowy sentinels and mournful whispers.
