    Old Fort of Fomboni

    FomboniComoros18th–19th Century

The Old Fort of Fomboni, situated near the waterfront of Mohéli’s island capital, stands as a quiet testament to the island's turbulent maritime defense against 19th-century pirate fleets and colonial invaders. Constructed with thick coral-rag walls and coastal watchtowers, the fort protected local sultans and royal court treasures. Today, the atmospheric ruins are associated with local ghost lore, featuring phantom night watchmen, unexplained shadows along the sea ramparts, and eerie whisperings near the ancient powder stores.

    Citadel of Mutsamudu

    MutsamuduComoros1782–1789

The Citadel of Mutsamudu, looming over the historic port town of Mutsamudu on Anjouan island, was constructed in the late 18th century by Sultan Abdallah I to defend the kingdom against Malagasy slave raids. Built with massive coral-stone walls, underground dungeons, and British-supplied cannons, the fortress survived intense naval bombardments and sieges. Today, the fortress is famous for ghost sightings of 18th-century sentinels, echoing footsteps in dark subterranean cells, and phantom cannon fire heard during stormy nights.
