Baldan Bereeven Monastery
Baldan Bereeven Monastery (Baldan Bereeven Khiid) is a vast mountain monastic complex situated in the scenic Jargalant River valley of Khentii Province, near the birthplace of Genghis Khan. Founded in 1777 and once housing over 8,000 monks across a massive granite amphitheater, the complex was utterly devastated during the 1937 communist purges. Surrounded by sacred granite cliffs carved with giant Buddhist deities, caretakers and visitors report haunting disembodied chanting, phantom robed figures wandering the pine forest, and strange optical lights along the mountain trails.
