Mayong Village
Mayong, situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in the Morigaon district of Assam near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, is globally famous as the 'Land of Black Magic' and the sorcery capital of India. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'Maya' (meaning illusion or magic), Mayong has been associated with tantra, occult practices, herbal healing, and black magic for over a thousand years. Historical records and epics like the Mahabharata mention Mayong as a feared realm of powerful sorcerers. Today, while modern education has transformed the village, Mayong preserves its mystical heritage through ancient tantric manuscripts, traditional herbal healers (bez or ojha), the Mayong Central Museum, and enduring legends of shape-shifting magicians and vanishing armies.
