The Coal Mines Historic Site near Saltwater River on Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula was established in 1833 as Van Diemen's Land's first operational coal mine and premier secondary punishment station. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Australian Convict Sites listing, the desolate stone ruins and subterranean punishment cells bear silent witness to extreme convict suffering, brutal hard labor, and pervasive ghost encounters.
Atauro Island (Município Ataúro), situated 25 kilometers directly north of Dili across the Ombai Strait, is world-renowned for its pristine marine biodiversity and coral reefs. Used by Portuguese colonial authorities from the late 19th century as a penal island for political exiles, Atauro was repurposed by the Indonesian military in the 1980s as a harsh internment camp where over 6,000 Timorese civilians were forcibly deported and held under brutal conditions in Makili and Beloi. Today, the island's former exile sites and Japanese WWII defense caves are associated with local tales of ghost lights, disembodied cries, and restless spirits.
Established off the southern coast of Vietnam in 1862 by French colonizers, Con Dao Prison (Bagne de Poulo Condore) was a notorious penal colony where tens of thousands of political prisoners were incarcerated, tortured, and executed in infamous 'tiger cages'. Paired with the unfinished Ma Thien Lanh 'Ghost Bridge' in the jungle, the entire Con Dao island archipelago is considered one of Vietnam's most haunted and spiritually active locations.
