    Massacre Bay (A'asu)

    A'asuAmerican Samoa1787

Tucked along the secluded northern coast of Tutuila Island, Massacre Bay at A'asu was the site of a tragic 1787 bloody clash between French explorers led by Captain Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, and local Samoan warriors. Twelve Frenchmen—including second-in-command Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle—and dozens of Samoans perished in the violent engagement. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the remote cove and stone monument grounds are infamous for intense supernatural encounters, phantom French shouting, ghostly musket fire, and restless ancestral spirits (aitu).
