    High in the lush rainforest ridge above Leone village, Tataga-Matau Fortified Quarry Complex (Site AS-34-10) is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric basalt quarrying and defensive fortification complexes in Polynesia. Utlized between 1000 AD and 1500 AD, ancient Samoans extracted dense fine-grained basalt here to manufacture prized adzes (stone tools) exported across the Pacific. Featuring massive defensive earthworks, stone terraces, and pit fortifications, the jungle-swallowed site is deeply revered and feared for intense supernatural phenomena, ancient warrior apparitions, and protective spirit guardians (aitu).
